As Ruby Moon, Nakuru is Yue's counterpart. Actually, the whole Eriol teem has the silhouette of Sakura and co. Sakura and Eriol are the little kids in charge, Yue and Ruby Moon are the human-like creatures with wings, and Kero and Suppi are the little stuffed animals that turn into large cat-like beasts. These counterparts balance each other out in more ways than one. First off, though Ruby Moon is neither female nor male, she likes to choose the female figure as a human and has a much more feminine build even as her actual self. She's fun-loving, lighthearted, and laughs a lot. Yue (though questionable whether he's more masculine than feminine) on the other hand, is just about as emotionally-drained as he can get. While Yue is the essence of light, cold colors, Ruby Moon is clad with a passionate, warm red.
Nakuru's general job in the third season of CCS is to be an annoyance, a distraction, a bump in the road. She's assigned to keep Yukito as clueless as possible about Yue. In order to do this, she has to keep Touya and Yukito apart and always burst in on them whenever Touya is about to say something about Yukito's true form. As Touya is able to sense that Yukito isn't quite human, he's the only one who can tell Yukito about Yue's existence. Therefore, whenever they have a single moment to themselves (leaving all the rabid fangirls screaming in anticipation), Nakuru is often there to interrupt it. Because Eriol can't afford for Yukito to know of his true form yet, Nakuru is added into the equation to come in between the two. Nakuru pretends that she has a crush on Touya and is quite open with her feelings: always tagging after him, hugging him and never letting go, eating his ice cream. Towards the end of the series, Touya is finally completely fed up with her and pushes her out of the way. However, Nakuru isn't insulted or dejected. She doesn't take a lot seriously and didn't quite take her feelings that she cultivated for Touya seriously either. They were just a part of her job, which she carried out perfectly for quite a while until the circumstances no longer allowed her to thwart Touya and Yukito's relationship. She sighed a resigned sigh at knowing that she wouldn't be able to come in between them anymore, then skipped off to find something else that would keep her amused, now that her one source of entertainment was gone.
Nakuru plays a rather minor role in the series as a whole but the impact that she has on Touya and Yukito is the main focus of her existence. And you can't help but love her background theme music whenever she appears in the anime -- it's so skippy and bouncy, representing her character well. Nakuru is such a lighthearted human being that one often forgets that she's actually an alien. At the end of the series I wonder what happens to her and Suppi, but I assume they go with Eriol to live in England. |
