Mizuki Kaho is a very intriguing character. She appears in episode 26 ("Sakura and the Wonderful Teacher"), when she caught a hurried and distracted Sakura from falling flat on her face as she was roller-blading home. Sakura had forgotten that she was supposed to make dinner that night, and she had managed to avoid falling in her rush until a cat got in her way and she tripped. She braced herself as she fell, when she was caught by a woman with long hair and sunglasses, who asked Sakura if she was okay, and the flustered Sakura replied blushing that she was fine. The woman told Sakura that they would meet again tomorrow, and then walked off, leaving Sakura completely befuddled. Later that night, Sakura was talking to Kero-chan about the woman and what she said, which aroused Kero-chan's suspicions that it was strange the woman was certain they would see each other again. Sakura said that the woman was very beautiful, and she didn't suspect her at all. In fact, she was kind of looking forward to seeing her again. :P
The
next day at school, Sakura's class had a new math teacher. To Sakura's
amazement, the new math teacher was none other than the woman that
caught her on the stre Kaho's eventually starts to appear in Sakura's dreams. In her dream, Sakura is standing on a tall building again, facing the Tokyo Tower. However, this time, her dream is longer and has more detail: she sees a silhouette of a woman in a dress standing on Tokyo Tower, facing her. The woman has long, flowing hair which flies in the breeze, and her brown eyes glow as she smiles calmly at Sakura. Sakura doesn't realize who she actually is until towards the end of the second season, when Kaho's actual intentions are revealed. Until then, Kaho is completely shrouded in mystery, and has an uncanny ability to predict the future to an extent. She always appears at the right place at the right time, and she even sees Sakura using the Clow Cards, but shows no reaction, as if she knew about the Clow Cards from the beginning and had been observing Sakura. She has a motto which both she and Touya share: "There are no such things as coincidences in this world. There is only the inevitable." When Sakura told Touya about her new math teacher who was named Mizuki Kaho, he was really shocked to heard the name, and we learn later that Touya and Kaho were an item when Touya was in junior high school. True, Kaho is considerably older than Touya, keeping in mind that when she comes back she is a teacher (assuming she's been through college) and Touya's only still in high school. However, they truly loved each other before Kaho had to leave, and before Kaho left, she told Touya: "It's okay... by the time we meet again, we will both have found another love." Touya is never nearly as comfortable around her again when they meet, however... he probably feels Kaho's aura around her and is wary of her whenever she is near. When Kaho comes back to Tomoeda, she lives at a Shinto temple (her clothes resemble Hino Rei's from Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon) and she is often seen with a bell that makes a loud clanging sound. Kaho uses this bell and clangs it for a number of reasons. She uses it to warn Sakura-tachi as they are being covered by the Maze card, but her warning is futile because it was already too late. Their clanging noise is also heard whenever Kaho arrives on the scene at her home, and we never know what the bell is actually for until it performs the task that it was created to do at the end of the second season. After its task is performed, it disappears.
Kaho's true role in CCS is revealed at the end of the second season. Sakura has finally caught the final Clow Card, Earthy. It is time for the final judgment performed by Yue. Sakura has to beat Yue in order to pass the final judgment. However, Yue is the one person who is the most important to her, and she doesn't have the heart to hurt him. She thinks quickly of a card that will not harm Yue but instead will capture him as gently as possible, so she immediately calls upon the Wood. However, Wood is under the moon sign, meaning that Yue has complete control over it. Sakura's attack backfires against her and she is captured by the vines of Wood. Yue then tells her that she has failed the judgment and that disaster will fall upon the world. The vines get tighter and start to cover Sakura as she asks Yue what the disaster is. Yue replies, "That is, to forget. If the candidate chosen by Kerberos the Appointer cannot defeat Yue the Judge, the Clow Cards, and everyone involved with the Clow Cards will forget the feeling of 'love' towards the person they love most." Kero-chan explains that the Clow Cards treasure most the person who sealed and signed on them. But if this person does not qualify as the Master or the Mistress, in order not to grieve, the cards would forget the person they love most. The next thing we know, Sakura wakes up from her bed and she goes through a series of events where everyone's feeling of love for their most important person has been forgotten. There is no longer a picture of her mother Nadeshiko on the desk in the kitchen, Touya does not tease Sakura about being a monster, Yukito is no longer at the place that he used to wait for Touya every morning, Tomoyo acts like Sakura is a complete stranger. When Sakura comes into the classroom, Yamazaki addresses Chiharu with her last name (Mihara), and Sakura asks "Chiharu-chan, Yamazaki-kun calls you 'Mihara-san'?" Chiharu replies: "It's not like we know each other very well." Terada-sensei talks to Rika and she acts completely indifferent to him, Shaolan shows absolutely no emotion towards Sakura whatsoever, and of course, there is no Kero-chan or Clow Cards. Everything is dull and Sakura feels empty. Sakura snaps out of the vision when she remembers Yukito and her feelings for him, and she hears a strange clanging sound which brings her to the present. Sakura breaks free of Wood's binds, much to Yue's shock. She steps down from the vines and looks at Kaho, who is standing with the bell that she always carries around. The bell starts to fade into thin air, and Kaho says that the bell was left behind by Clow Reed, in order to give Sakura a second chance in the Final Judgment. Once the task was over, it vanished, therefore that was the final chance that Sakura would have to beat Yue. Kaho is the one that initially gets Sakura to activate her new power of the Stars, and the power to beat Yue and pass the Final Judgment. After the second season is over and the third season begins, Kaho goes abroad to England to study. She and Sakura keep in touch by writing to each other, and Sakura tells her just about everything that happens to her, such as when she meets Eriol and more strange things happen with the Clow Cards. However, there is one more question that is not answered about Kaho at the end of the second season, and that is how she was connected with Clow Reed in the first place. That is revealed later in the 3rd season, so I'll leave that one for you to wonder on your own. ^_~ |
